Forgot your iPhone passcode? Reset it
You can reset a locked iPhone right on the phone, no computer needed. It erases the iPhone, so you’ll restore from a backup after.
15 min · iPhone
Before you start
- iOS 15.2 or later.
- Find My is turned on.
- The iPhone is on Wi‑Fi or cell service.
- You know your Apple Account password.
- Changed your passcode in the last 72 hours? You can use the old one instead (step 3).
- Enter the wrong passcode until the lock screen changes. You’ll see iPhone Unavailable or Security Lockout.
- Tap Forgot Passcode?. It’s at the bottom of the screen. On iOS 15.2 to 16 it says Erase iPhone.
- Changed it recently? Tap Enter Previous Passcode. Only shows within 72 hours of a passcode change. Enter your old passcode and set a new one. You’re done, nothing is erased.
- Tap Start iPhone Reset. Confirm on the Security Lockout screen.
- Enter your Apple Account password. This signs you out of your Apple Account on this iPhone.
- Erase the iPhone. This deletes all your data and settings.
- Set it up again. Restore from your iCloud backup if you have one, then set a new passcode.
