Unlocked phones in Canada: what it means and why it matters

Oct 3, 2026 · 4 min read

An unlocked phone works with any carrier's SIM card. A locked phone only works with the carrier that sold it.

Good news if you're in Canada: since December 1, 2017, the CRTC's Wireless Code requires that every new phone sold in Canada is unlocked, and carriers must unlock older phones for free on request.

So why do locked phones still show up? Older phones bought before 2017, phones imported from the US or elsewhere, and phones that are still financed or reported lost or stolen can have problems on other networks.

How to check on iPhone: Settings, then General, then About. Next to Carrier Lock it should say 'No SIM restrictions.'

How to check on Android: the easiest test is to put in a SIM card from a different carrier. If you get a network unlock prompt, it's locked.

Why it matters: an unlocked phone lets you switch to a cheaper plan anytime, use a local SIM when travelling, and sell the phone for more.

Switching carriers or plans? We set up plans in store and can move your number for you. Bring your phone and we'll check that it's ready for the new network.
