5 signs your battery needs replacing

If your phone dies at 20–30%, drains fast, gets hot while charging, slows down, or the screen starts to lift, your battery is worn out. Check your battery health in Settings. If it’s under 80%, it’s time for a new battery.

The 5 signs

A worn battery can’t hold or give power the way it used to. Here’s what that looks like day to day.

  1. It dies at 20–30%. Your phone shuts off even though it says it has charge left.
  2. It drains fast. You charge it in the morning and need to charge again by lunch.
  3. It gets hot while charging. A little warm is normal. Too hot to hold is not.
  4. Your phone slows down. Your phone may slow itself down to stop sudden shut-offs. Apps open slower and the camera lags.
  5. The battery is swelling. The battery puffs up and pushes the screen or back up. You may see a gap at the edge.
Warning: a swollen battery is a safety risk. A swollen battery can catch fire. Stop charging it right away, don’t press on it, and bring it to us as soon as you can.

Check your battery health

Your phone keeps track of how worn your battery is. It takes less than a minute to check.

Battery health

iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Tap Battery Health (or Battery Health & Charging).
  4. Look at Maximum Capacity. This is how much charge your battery holds compared to when it was new.

Samsung

  1. Open the Samsung Members app. It comes on most Samsung phones.
  2. Tap Support, then Phone diagnostics.
  3. Tap Battery status.
  4. Read the result. It will say Normal, Weak or Bad.

Pixel

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Tap Battery health.
  4. Read the result. It tells you if your battery is normal or worn.

Battery health shows on Pixel 8a and newer. On older Pixels, ask us to test it in store.

When to replace it

Batteries wear down a little every time you charge. Under 80% battery health means it’s time to replace it. On Samsung, a Weak or Bad result means the same thing.

Tip: A battery swap usually takes under an hour. Drop your phone off, grab a coffee, and it’s ready when you’re back.

Do

  • Use a good-quality charger.

Questions

How long does a phone battery last?

Most last about 2 to 3 years. After about 500 full charges, they hold around 80% of their first charge.

Will a new battery make my phone faster?

Often, yes. If your phone was slowing itself down to protect a worn battery, a new one brings back full speed.

Will I lose my photos or apps?

No. A battery swap doesn’t touch your data. We still suggest a backup before any repair, just in case.

Is it safe to keep using a swollen battery?

No. Stop charging it and bring it in. A swollen battery can catch fire.

Is there a warranty?

Yes. Every battery we install comes with our warranty.
